BIM and Baker
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a comprehensive tool that uses extensive
3-D modeling tied to an object-based database. BIM is a proactive effort to improve
construction processes such as estimating, constructability reviews, and scheduling.
Because BIM is still evolving within the concrete construction industry, BIM must
be defined in regards to the desired result of each project.
Since Baker began exploring BIM in 2007, we have been able to put it to use in Engineering,
Preconstruction and Operations by increasing our familiarity of the structure and
helping with constructability issues. Our BIM services include the coordination
of CIP work and placement of lift drawings including embed layout.
Software Utilized
Baker currently uses the BIM software Autodesk Revit Structure 2012. We review the
constructability of the project, derive quantities, and establish a comprehensive
project schedule. These planning steps increase the value and precision of our final
estimate.
Detailed Experience
As part of our efforts to continuously improve, we bring forward new technologies
like BIM. This is a snapshot of how it is helping our team and our processes:
- Using the model for clash detection
- Estimating using a model
- 4D scheduling and simulation
